Hello Dennis: All of my rhizomes are the same color - but the interesting
thing I would like to share with all of you is this: How many of you
know that there is an Iris rhizome - highly scented flower - that is said
to bew the newest source of essence in Japan - which is gleaned from the
rhizome? Have you ever heard of this - anyone?
I have some of these Iris - and the source is Hollands Gardens in
Washington State. The name of the Iris is "Sweet Lena", The scent is
outstanding, and a small bouquet in the house radiates the beautiful
fragrance throughout. Lena, was the name of Mr. Holland's Mother who
grew these old, old Iris. Apparently she gave 6 rhizomes to him many,
many years ago and he has grown them in a field next to his home for many
years.
He told me early this spring, that Martha Stewart's people contacted him
and he said that she wanted to do a feature about them. I haven't seen
it - and I don't know if it was accomplished. But one thing that I know
- is that the flowers from Sweet Lena are the sweetest of any I have seen.
They are a very light shade of violet. Mr. Holland said that a company
in Japan wanted to buy everything he had - (the rhizomes) so they could
make a highly prized perfume from them. I don't know if they did that or
not either.
KJust thought I would share this with all of you. I have had Sweet Iris
for three years, and it multiplies readily - so I have expanded my
bouquet potential. One day I will have enough to sell a few to anyone.
I have not seen a thread on here about scented iris - so maybe others on
the list have a scented favorite that is still available to purchase
somewhere.
