I'd suggest Louisiana iris.  The tall beardeds you may have loved
in Ohio are going to be very marginal in Central Florida, though
if you are zone 9 rather than 10 you might be able to do it.

However your climate is *ideal* for growing LA iris and they are
very beautiful to boot.

I can't do it because I don't get enough rain and my soil is
way too alkaline, but folks throughout the Southeast swear by 'em.
