Craig asked:
Carolyn, What did you use in the pots? A potting mix or soil from the
garden. What size pots did you use? I am looking for a way to have JIs and
not have to find a new bed for them after they are dug. The pool looked
like a possible way.
I answer:
I used commercial potting soil, hoping for virgin soil, some fertilizer, but
not much. I used whatever pots I had, probably 2 quart for the most part,
I was particularly interested in the depth of the pot, so roots could grwo
down. The pool could be disguised with rocks around the outside, plantings
and/or plastic lining hung over the edge. A kid's pool is a kids pool if you
are in the city, you want it to look good. One of the reasons I moved out
of that pool situation was that it deteriorated and was beginning to break
apart. If I look today, I bet I could find pieces of it.
Here's an idea, how about lining a wading pool with 4 mil plastic and putting
new soil in that and planting in that new soil?? That could be changed
whenever needed!! Could be sunken, or made to look like a raised bed --
forego the pots!! I just like to get good roots and have some control over
the watering, etc.
