Isn't it wonderful to be growing plants that came from others. I never look
at my Santa Rosa plum without thinking of Everette Lineberger who gave it to
me. My double lilies of the valley always remind me of the lady who gave
them to me---Shirley Pope. Our beautiful peony LOVELY ROSE brings back
memories of the wonderful George Crossman. All my columbines came from Alice
Bouldin's seed...and they never bloom that I do not remember her with love.
Likewise with the coralbells and Rosalie Figge, the Japanese iris FUJI and
Johnnye Rich and Lewis Lawyer...and I could go on and on.
Some of the persons who gave me plants, like George, Alice and Johnnye are
dead now...but they live on in my garden. In a speech a couple of years ago,
Roy Epperson of High Point, NC, said his garden was much more enjoyable
because of the plants who reminded him of beloved friends...and I am sure
most gardeners must feel this way. Maybe its why gardeners tend to be such
nice people. Clarence Mahan in VA
