Good questions, but the answers are not as good, I fear. I asked these same
questions of Hiroshi Shimizu, a Japanese authority. He advised me that If
you planted the clumps in rows, with room to walk down between the rows, you
could move the irises to the space between the rows (I have always planted
much more intensively than that, and when I once tried moving them into
spaces between the clumps it didn't work.) He also told me that if you grow
other things where the Japanese irises were planted, it Japan it is believed
you must wait 10 years to replant Japanese iris. He is also the one who told
me that a man in Tokyo has been able to use the same soil by "cooking" it at
high temperatures. Hope this helps. Clarence Mahan in VA
