I have read in several sources that Japanese Iris do best in virgin soil
(at least to JI) and assumed it was because they were heavy feeders and depleted
the soil of many nutrients beyond the NPK. I have not yet been in the same
yard/garden for 3 years so have not experienced any effect from growing them in
the same place. For those that have - How far away should JI be replanted from
their old locations ? - I would assume the roots extend only several inches away
from the rhizome and beyond this should be OK. Secondly how many years should
elapse before re-using a location ? Moving these guys is not a big problem
except that I must amend the local soil PH and provide extra water in the areas
for the JI, and all my watering systems are automatic (we don't get rain all
summer)
