What I was referring to about the "block of votes" from the West Coast was that
West Coast judges in voting FOR a Dykes Medal winner naturally vote for
something that grows well in THEIR gardens. It is hard NOT to vote FOR
something that looks fantastic every year. If a particular West Coast iris does
not do well on the East Coast or Central, oops almost said coast <grin> those
judges don't have the opportunity to vote AGAINST that iris. Instead, they
vote for other irises, which in effect, splits their potential voting power.
NOW, if they all voted FOR one particular iris then they could sway the next
Dykes Medal Winner. OR if they had the power to vote AGAINST an iris, then they
could greatly affect the DM winner! It's not how you count the votes, but all
in the distribution.
