AISMEMBERSHIP

Bill Smoot writes that he thought I should have posted an answer to Jim
Schroetter's question about whether or not there was a pro-ration of dues
allowed for prospective AIS members who join late in the year. Because the
answer to Jim's question was lengthy, I DID REPLY in a private email message.
As all of you know, who are already AIS members, the information regarding the
new calendar year membership and no pro-ration of dues was in the minutes of the
November, 1995 board meeting.which were published in the January, 1996 Bulletin.
See page 94.
To set the record straight, I have had many questions regarding this issue of
pro-rating dues, and they have all come from Regions 3 and 4. I have attempted
to answer each on an individual basis. In Jim's situation, with some 21 new
members, he has elected to wait until October for the new members to join AIS.
(This means their memberships will start as of January 1, 1997.)
While it is one thing to join late and pay the full amount, please be aware,
Bill Smoot, that in no way do I think a new member is getting the SHAFT as you
so ungently put it. They IMMEDIATELY get all bulletins which have been published
to date for the year 1996, a welcome letter explaining our calendar year policy,
(and I also tell them they can expect a dues notice in November), and a new
member packet. Any new member will have received all four quarterly bulletins
well before they get a dues notice. Not ONE new member has written a letter of
complaint after receiving the welcome letter.
As I told Jim Schroetter, I am more than willing to listen to ideas and
suggestions concerning dues periods and payments.
The iris list is for people interested in irises and I did not respond publicly
to Jim Schroetter's question because I thought it was not in the best interest
of all the readers of the iris list. Marilyn Harlow, AIS membership secretary
