Thanks to all for the information and support on starting a local iris
society (especially document from Mike Lowe). I think I still would like to
see a local society in operation before striking out on my own. I have a
target date in my head of approximately 9-12 months or so away. Like all
real people, this effort of establishing a local society will take time,
since I work a day job to support my iris habit and I have another full time
job as "Mr. Mom" to my three year old daughter.
I've already networked with the local plant nursery and they welcome posting
of plant club announcements and I think I could convince them to let me give
a seminar on irises or have some recruiting seminars there.
Intuitively, I felt like other plant societies in the area would be good
recruiting ground. I've visited a big daylily collector nearby and tried to
find out if he knew anyone that was into growing irises as well, although I
wasn't able to make my first club meeting. Don't worry, I would never
"defect" to the Haemerocallis (sp??) society - daylilies are pretty, but
they just don't do the same thing for me that irises do. :) No offense to
daylily people on the IRIS-L.
Shirley Pope's info that Mike Lowe sent to me was sage advice from someone
who obviously has experience in club/society matters. - Good stuff that I
heartily recommend. I also welcome any further information on the topic of
establishing a local iris society/ AIS affiliate.
