Alfalfa pellets

I just finished planting the bulk of the TB's that I purchase and divided
this year.  I've been hearing and reading how great alfalfa meal and pellets
are so I went out and bought some before planting this year's new
acquisitions.  My alfalfa pellets are the GoldKist brand and the only
ingredient listed is "alfalfa meal". Is this 100% alfalfa or could it have
corn or molasses in it?  I don't know how stringent the regulations are, if
any, for ingredient labeling of livestock food.  I paid $7.00 per lb. bag.
At the feed store I told the guy that I didn't want the alfalfa to feed
animals and he immediately asked was I using it on roses.  Apparently
Rosarians frequent that feed store as well.

Also, can you put too much alfalfa on the new plants?  I calculated that I
used the equivalent of 50lbs./100 square feet.  I scooped with a 1 gallon
planter can and put a thin layer over the top of the soil (enough so that
you couldn't really see the soil).  I then dug this into the top 6 inches or
so of soil.  I could still see the alfalfa pellets in the soil when I
planted the new rhizomes.

Warning!! Dividing and planting irises is not for the faint of heart,
especially in 90 degree plus weather. Maybe this could be an Olympic event
one day. :)  I offered up about a pint of blood to the great god of the
mosquitos just preparing the beds in the last few days (and that's with a
generous splashing of Skin So Soft). I was also in a race against the rain
clouds this morning.
But, I'm happy and so are all of those irises that I planted! What? your
irises don't talk to you, too?  Spend 3 hours working outside in the
Southern U.S. summer conditions and you will swear your irises can talk too! :)

Given everyone's praise of alfalfa and all of my hard work, I'm expecting
five foot tall TB's that won't need staking next spring. :)
