The grass-roots tabulators of the Symposium (AIS Regional Vice Presidents),
and the overall tabulator at the time of the 'write-in' change, convinced
the AIS Board of Directors that dealing with 'write-ins' was so incredibly
onerous, time-consuming and difficult it couldn't possibly continue. ;)
Ergo, the privilege of adding your favorite iris and (if there were
sufficient numbers of votes) having that favorite appear on the next
ballot, was dropped.

Prior to wide usage of computer spreadsheets this may have been valid and
supportable reasoning. For those employing spreadsheets the task of dealing
with 'write-ins' is trivial. [Many thanks to Scott Aitken for emailing the
symposium listing to this region's tabulator!!!]

PS: Write ins managed to get, among others, HOLY NIGHT onto the ballot. A
most worthy iris and one that was nearly bypassed in the whole
ballot/vote/award process.
