The color forms of I. virginica are quite similar to I. versicolor.  There
are "blue violet" forms of various shades, white forms, pink forms....It can
be quite difficult to distinguish between these two irises.  Often, but not
always, the standards of I. virginica are larger than versicolor.  If you
want to see more similarity, compare a blue violet flower of versicolor with
a blue violet flower of a Siberian iris....they can look the same to even an
experienced eye...of course, the leaves of versicolor have black spots when
you hold them up to the light....it being a water lover....and the leaves of
a Siberian do not have the black spots.  Clarence Mahan in VA
