Right. The luminata and plicata patterns (properly speaking) are patterns of
anthocyanin pigments. This relates to the discussion about what to call an
iris that seems to have yellow plicata markings on a cream ground. It's not
a plicata (genetically speaking), because yellow is a carotenoid pigment,
and the distribution of the two kinds of pigments must be caused by completely
different genes.
There's not a whole lot of consistency in the way the iris world has
decided to name the color patterns. Back in prehistoric times, for
example, "amoena" was strictly an anthocyanin pattern: the standards
were white and the falls were some shade of blue or purple. When
"carotenoid amoenas" came along, with white stands and yellow or pink
falls, it was decided that it would be less confusing if these were
also called "amoenas" instead of inventing a new name. Yet you can
see in the definition of the luminata pattern that Marilyn posted that
the luminata pattern is _defined_ to be a pattern of the anthocyanin
pigments. So if someone should happen to breed an iris with yellow
pigment between the veins and white hafts, styles, veins, and edges,
such a flower would not be a luminata.
I guess it depends on whether the people making the decision are more
concerned with breeding or with the appearance of the flower.
