Not sure how 2x4 would fair as it sounds a bit shallow. I use floorboards 
or similar (1x6-8) that have been presure treated with a wood 
preservative (gravel boards are similar) down on my allotment. All these 
are nailed together with galvanised nails onto 2x2 fence posts that are 
sunk into the ground. This whole lot is about 12ft x 4ft and filled with 
garden compost to the rim. Seems to give good results with the seedlings 
and divisions I plant in them, I've had Sibirica seedlings flower in 
three years were normally they languish in my heavy clay due to the "dry" 
summers we have.
