Although I don't "raise" most of my beds, they are all edged. I use
landscape timbers and till and plant inside of them. I drill holes in
each end and then drive a 12" spike through the timber into the ground
to keep them in place. My beds are 5' x 138' and without the spikes
they would never stay in place. The timbers are doing very well here
and do not heave out of the ground as the concrete edging stones do. We
still have 2 beds bordered with those scalloped concrete edging stones
but the next time I dig them they will be replaced with landscaping
timbers as well.
