More caution, if the landscaping fabric is smooth plastic, you'll get the weeds growing up through any tears that happen. And they will happen. Then you'll end up with a bigger tear getting them out.
In other words, the substance is not well thought of. A professional landscaper of my acquaintance once said, "No doubt landscape fabric has it's uses, but I sure haven't figured out what they are yet."
