HYB: and...Dead Hybridizers?

Hi, all.

Last Thursday, at the FWIS club meeting, Hooker Nichols showed us a
slide of a seedling Keith Keppel has that he doesn't plan to introduce.
Instead, he (Hooker Nichols) said that K. Keppel will incorporate it's
genes into "one of Gatty's lines."

I took this to mean that Joe Gatty is no longer with us. (Or maybe he
just doesn't hybrdize anymore.) I also thought I heard that Mary Dunn
was also no longer with us.

My questions are:
1) Are the 2 aforementioned hybridizers deceased?
and
2) What did he mean when he said "lines..." I thought hybridizers could
cross ANY two flowers from ANY hybridizers. Am I missing something?
