cult:Cutting Fans & Survivability

This past weekend I went on two garden tours. The first was a tour of the
Nebraska State Fair Arboretum and the second was a tour of several Backyard
Habitats. Something I noticed was the fans of the irises had already been
cut back. I thought this wasn't done till late winter or early spring. Any
suggestions?
My suggestion for irises with survivability are the irises which smell like
grape kool-aid that I found at a no longer existing farmstead. Sorry I have
no name.
