Let me throw another clinker into the mix. Most iris growers (in
California anyway) cut *all* the roots off of iris to be transplanted.
Two reasons for this. One, they are easier to plant and two, to destroy
nemetodes if they are present. Iris will grow new roots almost
immediately in moist soil.
