I happened to be at Cordon Bleu Farms owned by Bob Brooks sometime
in the 70's when he was planting irises. He had earlier shaved off all
the roots, and then he would drop a rhizome, and stomp it into the ground.
I was livid! I decided to try it because those old roots are difficult to
set in the soil without air pockets. I was converted and have used the
California method ever since. It make take awhile cutting off all those
roots though, and I highly recommend fingernail scissors for that purpose.
