The rippled leaves happen when iris grow fast after a period of slow
growth. Iris leaves elongate from the bottom, close to the rhizome. Central
leaves "get stuck" in the fan and wrinkle as they grow. Eventually they
break free but the ripples remain. This is a lot more common in Louisianas
than in bearded irises, where the leaves have a coating (bloom) of slippery
wax.
