I second Rick's observation that newly-planted rhizomes in moist soil
grow new roots almost immediately. I had occasion this evening to uproot
(for reasons too involved to explain) two rhizomes that I had planted
two days ago after at least a month out of the ground. Their new roots
had grown 1/4" in 2 days in a bed of newly-sacrificed lawn augmented by
an inch of spent mushroom soil, watered with a dose of Miracle-Gro
followed by 4 hours of sprinkler watering.
As for trimming the fans, Don Spoon, a botanist (who knows all about
zygotes, etc.), digs his rhizomes with full fan untrimmed and recommends
planting same immediately. I have let them sit for almost 4 weeks in a
cool basement with minimal fan dying-back and planted them as is. We
shall see.
P.S. Rima -- I'm with Jeff. Hit that leaf spot with Daconil -- but also,
rip off (yes, rip) the spotty tops of those infected fans and throw them
away.

seedling that survives three years in his garden is a tough iris.
