Our soil is a gray clay that is like concrete when it is dry (now) and
sticks like glue when it is wet (in winter). We have used sand to amend it
and that helps, but what it needs most is organic matter. Peat works but
composted bark works better and can be cheaper (depends on where you get
it). Best of all is the compost we make ourselves.
In the southwestern parts of the US, the soils are often alkaline and the
water is often hard water which adds to the alkalinity. The acidity of
peat is *not* a problem here! Here the sun bakes the organic matter out of
the soil, so frequent doses of compost are a must. At least that is our
experience.
