Re: CULT: Borer detection

Like Bill, my husband sprays at least two times in the Spring. Three times=
 =
10 days apart seems to do the trick but we don't always find the time and =
end up with the knife and sulfur. The only reason to spray in the fall =
would be if the moth had time to complete a full cycle earlier than normal. =
=
This could happen with an early Spring and a hot Summer. I would not spray=
 =
in the fall until I had the first signs of borer. We have not yet needed to=
 =
spray in the fall but this year could be the first.

I don't think spraying in the fall would do much good. By this time the
borers have left the rhizomes and are pupating in the ground nearby. Two
spring sprayings with a systemic insecticide are usually recommended,
separated by about ten days. The first spraying should be done when the
leaves are 6" tall.

There should be some good material in the archives on borers.
