I do not understand Sharyn's recommendation to spay for iris borers in
the fall. At this time, the larvae for this year have pupated, emerged,
laid their eggs and the adults have probably died. My understanding is
that the eggs are not usually laid on the plants but in dead vegetation
in the surrounding area. In the north, these eggs will not hatch until
the spring so that there is not point in spraying in the autumn as there
are no borers to kill. Are there areas further south where the eggs
hatch in the fall and overwinter on the plants? If not, it is costly,
ineffective, and hazardous to spray in the fall.

rain.
