rot?

Another rot question.
Today, I helped dig up a few (35) irises that had been run over by
monkey grass, and/or were in too much shade. In about half of them,
their rhizomes were REALLY long (some of them up to 7 or 8 inches,) but
were partially hollow, with just a crunchy outer layer. Although I
should add, that if I cut them deep enough I got to the "real" rhizomes.
Just curious, as this is not what I had pictured as "rot" judging from
all the emails yawl have sent about rot.
