Rusty, several times I have dug up old, neglected beds of iris that had
long, snaky rhizomes like you describe, some as long as 1'! Usually at
the "far end" of these rhizomes would be one lone fan, green & healthy,
so I just whacked away at the dried-out excess rhizome until I found
firm material, replanted in a fresh location & the iris bloomed the next
year. It's not rot -- just overcrowding, particularly noticeable in
nutrient poor, rocky soil.
