My weedy seedling Siberians grow in spaces between limestone rocks on
almost pure gravel and on top of and next to a cinder block footer under
my house. And they get only a few hours of direct sun. My gravelly
soil is dry as dust in summer (like this year with no rain for almost 2
months), but has very high available water during winter and spring,
when the siberians need it. So Rusty, maybe you could grow them under
your pines if you mix a LOT of organic matter, provide extra water
especially during the winter and spring, and maybe use big flat paving
stones for mulch.
Couldn't resist bringing up Clarence's rule of "no absolutes" again.
