	There are some people who will volunteer for anything but never
perform, and shaming them doesn't seem to affect them.

	I certainly wouldn't want a lot of people after me because I
didn't perform, but it would never enter my mind to malinger if I had
volunteered for a job.  So many people are depending on you.  Some have
passed Mr. Gifford's problem off on family illness.  That may have been
the case near the end, but he was not performing up-to-snuff prior to the 
illnesses.

	There was a report that something similar happened in the daylily
society several years ago.  Orders were not being filled, but they had all
of their money and didn't know who ordered what.  That might have been
even worse.  At least, our checks were not cashed.
