In making up orders for fall bulbs (much too late as usual), I compiled
these notes and thought they might be of interest to listers--
English Iris: available in mix from van Bourgondiens (VB) at 8/6.50, from
Parks (P) @5/8.95 and van Dycks (D) at 8/4.95. McClure and Zimmerman (MZ)
have named varieties @6/5.45.
Spanish Iris: mix is 12/3.95 from VB, 20/4.50 from D. Note that all
catalogs picture a regeliocyclus hybrid as a Spanish Iris!!!!
Reticulatas: MZ has more recent named varieties, including 'Katherine
Hodgkin (1/3.95)'; D has named varieties separate and a mix @ 25/4.25-4.75.
35/5.00 mix from VB, 12/6.95 from P, 25/5.95 from Holland (H). Scheepers
(S) has a mix for 25/5.00, by name at same price.
Dutch Iris: 35/5.00 mix from VB, 25/6.95 from H. 'Beauty' series by named
varieties from P at 10/8.95, from H @ 25/6.95, from D (biggest selection),
named 'Beauty' @ 12/4.95, 'Beauty' mix @ 25/5.95.
Iris bucharica: 3.95 apiece at P; 5/4.75 from S.
Hermodactylus tuberosa (Widow Iris): 5/5.95 from P, 10/3.00 from S.

I've ordered bulbs from all of these places and don't notice any
differences in quality.
Given the cost of Dutch Iris, I grow them as annuals here and load every
little gap in the garden with them. However, some do perennialize and many
more probably would in areas with dry summers or better drained soil. The
'Beauty' varieties are absolutely terrific if you haven't grown them yet.
Reticulatas last 2-3 years before ceasing to bloom (foliage appears
indefinitely), bucharica has lasted up to 5 years. Excited this year about
trying English iris after seeing them grown to perfection in southern
Scotland (dream on!) And growing H. tuberosa for the first time in 35
years.
