The mention of lilies makes me think you may have pocket gophers. They will
walk all across town to eat a lily bulb and I have acyually had a tug-of-war
with a gopher on the bulb end and me on the stem.
Superficially they look something like a vole on steriods. I don't know that
their feet are actually webbed but the front paws are like shovels. The key to
their id is a pocket in each cheek in which they store food to bring home.
If you live in the West or on the prairies I think that might be what you have.
If so, you might have a problem. They are our most destructive pest.
