From: "william b. cook" <billc@atlantic.net>

Do any of you all frequently encounter any or all of the
following?

1. Being disconnected with extreme frequency.
-----------------
yes, but my ISP says it is not them, and I have been unable to
prove otherwise, other than telling them that I have stuff going
out, but not receiving a reply from them.
-----------------

2. Computer freezes up one to three minutes before being
disconnected.
-----------------
Nope, that seems like you may be looking at a hardware/software
problem. If you are running 95/98 or NT, try using RegClean and
see if the problem still occurs. I've had that clear up a lot of
weird problems on the machines I work on, and now consider it a
part of my tech kit. Also, do a good virus scan, just to be
sure. try uninstalling and reinstalling your software (run
regclean in between, and be sure to reboot each time). If you
really want to do a good job and you have backup of your data, do
a format and reinstall of all your software. You might also want
to try using some different software for your com stuff just to
see if it is the software.
------------------

3. Difficulty connecting.
------------------
Exactly what do you mean difficulty connecting? Do you actually
reach the ISP modem, and never complete the handshake? Do you
not even get that far? Does the handshake complete and then you
don't login? Not much to pin an answer to.
------------------

4. Getting the recording of a voice saying "...please hang up
and try
again..." when you get a busy signal.
-------------------
Yup, I hear that from time to time, not necessarily over the
modem. I hear it when the line has been open too long with
nothing happening. Someone either accidentally hung up with me,
one of the critters knocked the phone off the hook, etc. It
seems to be a standard phone company response when nothing else
fits the bill.
----------------------

5. Being disconnected while retrieving mail.
-----------------------
That happened to me once, but it was a dark and stormy night, and
I probably should not have been online anyway.
----------------------

6. Mail being lost frequently.
------------------------
Let me phrase it this way: Not that I am aware of.
------------------------

7. Getting a box saying that there is an error with the
connection while
online.
--------------------------
Depends on what the exact msg is. Some indicate a problem with
the server you are trying to connect to, whether your ISP's
server, or one in Timbuktu. If you can continue the session by
going elsewhere, it is probably indicative of another server,
router, or line being the problem. If you cannot, the fault is
with your ISP, his hardware, the line going in, the phone
company, your hardware, etc. Can be a hard one to pinpoint.
----------------------

No, this is not an advertisement. I am trying to find out
if this is
a chronic problem with all or most servers, or if it is unique
(or mostly
so) to ICC. I would rather not switch servers to encounter more
of the
same, or worse, yet why put up with the above for nothing. If
only Juno
would establish a local access number in Marion County,
Florida...

You've listed a lot of things here. They may or may not be
related. If you have a friend with a PC, why not try connecting
from his PC and see if any of the problems are appearing with his
setup. If they do, the problem is probably between you and the
ISP, i.e. your hardware, your software, the phone lines (a phone
company problem--good luck if it is), the ISP hardware, the ISP
software, or even an incompatibility between your modem and the
modem the ISP uses to accept incoming calls.
