Sixty to seventy irisarians gathered in North Little Rock this
week-end past at the Region 22 Fall Meeting, and what a fantastic meeting
it was!
Friday afternoon around 3:30 I arrived at the Greenleaf Plaza
(Holiday Inn until about two weeks ago). Our own Iris-l, Iris-Talk Celia
Storey was 'manning' the command center, and I got to meet her for the
first time outside of cyberspace. A picture of her had appeared in an
earlier newsletter so I recognized her immediately. What a charming,
polished lady, and what an asset to have her in AIS! The people in the
Central Arkansas Area Iris Society all just love her! Celia and I have
been talking on the net for well over a year now, and what a treat to meet
the lady who types the words we all read. She is not a wind-up doll
pecking at a keyboard but a real, live, breathing person!
Melody Wilhoit was the JT instructor. Her presentation was
embellished by slides of Louisiana irises that everyone ohed and aahed
over and put on their wish lists. Several of the slides materialized as
plants and were later auctioned in a quite lively bidding war with Ron
Mullin as the auctioneer. Melody brought copies of the long-awaited
results of the AIS Ballot. Thanks, Melody, for the ballot and for sharing
your knowledge of species as well as La's.
Ruth Simmons appears from time to time on this list, and her words
also turned into a person. Now I know why we don't get to hear more from
this workhorse of the Region and beyond. She is the editor of the Region
22 Newsletter and types TALL TALK, so no wonder she is so busy. Great to
put a face with a name!
I wish I could mention the names of all of the participants, but
that would be too long. My intent was to let you know the warm feeling
you get when you finally meet someone you've 'chatted' with or read on the
Net.
Come visit us next year in September in Hot Springs. The people
of Region 22 will guarantee you a good time!
