Fellow listarians! I have met the man, Walta hisself. Do not be fooled by
his folksy writing style, he's one of them college-educated fellers and
just as friendly as he could be. He and his fellow Mississippians upgraded
the company on hand for Region 22's annual meeting. We Arkies had been
terrified of the whole to-do, but the minute we saw those smiling faces --
and got a look at all the presents Walter had brought with him to hand
around -- troubles fell into proportion.
Region 22 met in North Little Rock, Arkansas, at an understaffed little
hotel suffering a deep identity crisis. One harried employee booked our
convention, set our tables, cooked our dinner and washed all the dishes.
Not all our plans came off without a hitch, but the fun survived.
I was only sorry that some of our most active local members missed the
meeting, the rhizome auction and the informative judging school given by
Melody Wilhoit. Late August is vacation time in Arkansas. Next year's
meeting is set for September in Hot Springs. We'll have a terrific turnout
from our club.
It was also a great pleasure to meet Ruth Simmons of our list. Lovely Ruth
did not pass the most comfortable weekend possible in Arkansas. Her car
died in the parking lot Friday and was still refusing to revive when we
said goodnight late Saturday. In addition, she found herself stuck at a
table in the back of the room with some of the worst-mannered people I have
ever seen at any judging school anywhere. They passed notes and giggled and
generally made it difficult for those of us who were there to learn.
I promise you, Ruth, these individuals will be dealt with most severely. ;-)
