Bill,
In Louisiana, the swamps do not dry out in summer. Oh, okay, this year may
be an exception, but in the swamp habitat of I. giganticaerulea, the irises
can expect to be in standing water all year. A little deeper in Spring
than in October, but still in water. I. fulva may be more likely to be
found in places that dry out now and then, such as roadside ditches. They
do go dormant and come back. I. brevicaulis is not found in standing
water, but rather in low meadows. It generally goes dormant in summer.
This is the experience in Louisiana, as I understand it. Irises in this
series in other areas may perform differently. After all, some are found
over a wide range.
