Best,

Iris Unguicularis is the winter blooming iris. Not very showy in bloom
but nice plant to have just for a spark of color in the dead of winter.
Leaves are grassy and evergreen. They are difficult to find at nurseries
or catalogs. Mainly, we get them from trading with other irisarians.
Alstromerias are commonly called Peruvian Lily though I have never heard
them called that (or I haven't been paying attention AGAIN!). They are
very popular in the cut flower trade and instantly recognized but not
usually by name.In the spring, they put up stems with whorls of thin,
bamboo-like leaves. They grow from a fleshy underground root system and
can be invasive. I have been told they are difficult to transplant
because of their brittle root system. Currently, I grow three different
color forms one of which is a deep yellow and is rather tall....about 3
feet. visit these websites for pictures of alstromeria.

Also, I grow Heuchera (Coral Bells) as a companion to irises. Not very
showy in flower but I grow it mainly for it's beautiful leaves and low
mounding habit.
By the way, where are you located in Seattle? I live in the city, a
little ways past Capitol Hill in the Central Area. You are welcome to
visit but I must warn you, I am in the middle of digging and dividing
and you might go home with plants you didnt bargain for. I work M-F ,
9-5 but am home on weekends so you can call if you would like to visit.
