My growing conditions are not ideal here but neither do I have a lot of
disease or unchecked pest problems and I never see this rate of first year
bloom, regardless of where I get the rhizomes. I'm lucky if I see fifty-
percent and some things skip two years. I do think that the cultural practices
of the rhizome source affect this as well as my own since the blooms are
instigated the year before, but there is more to it than that. The old
literature said that, in general, better bloom followed earlier re-planting,
and I'm finding that to be true. On the plus side, I don't mind skipping the
first year since the plant seems stronger for it.
