     Where, geographically, did the rhizomes come from?  It sounds like the
Iris Borer to me.  Be sure to kill that worm. [I am sure this was
accidental.]  The rot is caused by an opportunistic pathogen called
Erwinia, which infects Borer Damaged rhizomes.
