Mark, the vesper irises here usually seem to be all used up by late fall.
But if you check, you'll find a short, vertical rhizome just underground
with some lateral buds that will provide next year's plants.

However, they are fairly short-lived here and without being divided each
spring last only 3 or 4 years.  Every couple of years I grow some more from
seed.  They're blooming now in my garden, have been for 3 weeks, and look
good for a couple weeks more of bloom.
