Re: Rhizome quality

Hi Elizabeth -
I'm a little late getting in on this discussion but, none the less, felt I
needed to open my mouth!
I have found that the best bet is to place small orders with several gardens
and see who gives you the best stock. I'm sure that location has something to
do with rhizome size but, in my limited experience, I think it's more the
individual plants. Last year I ordered 38 plants from Schreiner's. This May,
29 of those bloomed, and several had more than one stalk. Schreiner's sent me
some of the biggest and healthiest plants I'd ever seen!
This year I ordered from Schreiner's and Cooley's. Cooley's rhizomes were
much smaller even though those two gardens are very close to each other. Now,
I'm not complaining about Cooley's plants (at least not until next spring!!)
but I think they will do just fine.
I also just dug up all my Iris, to move them to different beds, and was
amazed at the size of several of them! BLUE SUEDE SHOES had so many increases
I couldn't believe it!! And they were the size of my fist! But I had others
who's increases were the size of walnuts.
I think that as long as you aren't in a big rush to see tons of flowers the
first year, any size rhizome will reward you in the future. As long as you
don't get rotting plants, and are happy with the service and prices, most of
the gardens will treat you right. There are several I am going to buy from
next year (I''ve heard wonderful things about Superstition and Aitkens) and I
dealt with Sutton's this year (they are wonderful, too). Just order a few here
and there and decide who you like. I also figured out that trading with some
people is a great way to get some nice plants. Most important...have fun and
enjoy them.
