I purchased rhizomes from three sources in Oregon this year and
received plants that were much smaller than usual. I do not know if
growing conditions were different in that region this year or not, but
there was a noticeable difference in plant quality.
All of the above were allowed to dry out for about three weeks and
were then potted and placed in the shade.
About the same time I received an order from Superstition. And,
as others have said, these rhizomes were gigantic and had loads of
increase. I trimmed the roots for potting, but as of this writing, I have
not potted or planted these rhizomes. They have been in a 'nursery' tray
in the cool of the house for a month now. The center leaf is growing out
of the fan, and the little golden root nodules are forming on the heels of
the rhizomes. This is the longest time I have deliberately left rhizomes
out of the ground, and the 'shelf life' of Superstition rhizomes seems to
be the greatest of any commercial source I know of. Most of the outer
leaves have not dried out so I have not had to 'groom' them. For two
years in a row now, Superstition rhizomes have been the best I have
received.
