I am one of the supporters of sand as a mulch for bearded iris.
Sand serves as more than just a cosmetic function, however.
It keeps down weeds signifigantly. It prevents most of the damaging
frost heave that some of us experience. It also acts as an insulating
barrier against summer heat, allowing moisture to escape without
"packing" .
Some people have said that it causes their soil to harden like concrete, so I
would
suggest trying it in a limited area for a season before hauling in a
truckload.
The type of sand is also important. Coarse builders sand should be used rather
than the fine play sand, or the white sand used in cigarette urns.
