Bearded irises should not be mulched while in active growth. Newly set
plants or irises grown in extremely cold climates are sometimes mulched for
the winter to prevent freezing and thawing, but it's a chancy proposition.
Someone recently suggested a light mulch of clean sand, largely for
appearance's sake. This would probably be OK and I might try it.
Beardless irises in general appreciate a mulch of organic material.
Louisiana irises in particular thrive with mulch and it protects the
rhizomes from sun scald.
