A sand mulch is also an effective deterrent to crickets. I heartily
recommend it for bearded irises, especially the little dwarfs, which can be
eaten up entirely in just one evening of cricket feeding.
We have crickets aplenty in Little Rock this summer.
After pulling back the pine needle mulch from my LAs and finding several
well-gnawed by crickets, I am buying a sack of medium grade sand to add a
little mulch to the LAs, too. Just some, to cover the rhizomes.
