In a message dated 98-08-21 03:14:36 EDT, you write:
<< Many points are a match (PB foliage, MOST of what's noted about colors &
markings, etc.) But I'm unsure what's meant by "the general effect is that
of a short, open bloom with cup-formed standards" in Cornell Bulletin 112 --
the standards on my blooms were upright & essentially closed & the falls were
almost horizontal. Is that a match or not??? >>
Hard to tell. Verbal descriptions always highly problematical. Can't really
rely on descriptions alone any more than you can photographs alone. Got to
compare with a known specimen.
What the Cornell 112 is saying is that often the standards on LORELEY gape
open and fall slightly back. This "shortens" the perceived "height" of the
bloom--meaning it's measurement from stem up--and creates a convex 'cup' like
a waterlily. The gaping is not inevitable. The bloom does tend to have nearly
horizontal falls in many situations. I don't think I've ever seen them droop
much. I would reiterate the notable tendency for the base of one or more of
the standards to be marked--sometimes even halfway up-- with the color of the
falls, usually as irregular but not blurred blotches, often including some
haftish stripe effects.
There's a lot of LORELEY out there and the odds are better that you have that
one than some others that are similar.
The Cornell 112 is available in reprint from HIPS. It is a valuable document
for anyone interested in irises of the first quarter of the century. Details
are on the HIPS Page at: http://www.worldiris.com/.
