Wow,
I checked my mail this morning and found a huge number of messages, most
seemed to be about gift iris. I am not sure about the tone of most of the
messages. Hopefully people aren't too offended by extras. Personally I try
to send an extra that matches the order, for example if someone is big on
SAs, I send an SA or two :-) as a bonus, rebloomers, oncers etc. In no way
do we use a lesser quality plant for an extra. Usually we designate a bonus
plant the year before primarily because we have a lot of it and it is a very
strong grower. Giving gift iris doesn't cost much at all, in fact the only
significant cost is in the shipping and that is minimal. We just attach the
extra to the dig that is already scheduled, the crew is already in the field
digging and it takes little if no extra time at all to dig two or more of
one plant. It seems to me that if most people know that they will receive a
bonus but they don't have a lot of space, they can just order a few less
iris and give suggested bonus iris on their order. We always try to give
people what they want as a gift if they suggest it. (within financial
reason!)
Hope this clears some murky waters.
Sincerely
Mike Sutton
