Re: CAT - Free plants

Hi Glenn,

Since you asked for a response from a grower I will respond.

Before we became a commercial garden I loved extras, as it was a way to
increase my stock. I never expected them or would ever think of writing a
wish list but was always thrilled to receive what ever I got. It was great
to get a new addition!

Now that we sell commercial, it's different. We are a small garden and just
beginning to increase our stock. I would much prefer someone suggesting a
particular extra as it
is very frustrating trying to think of what to give. I want the person to
be happy with their irises and certainly don't want to give them something
they already have.

I do think we expect them though, and I would much prefer just getting what
I order.
Please don't misread this as I'm not grateful for extras, I am!
But........................I have limited space like everyone else and I
plan accordingly to what I order. If I receive 5 to 10 extras, where do I
put them? And the extra time to plant and care for them.

I would be pleased to have people buy from us because of our quality irises
and personal service, not because of the extras we give. It cost time and
money to grow irises and the small grower has lots of competition against
the larger grower. They can give a lot of extras as they probably have a
lot of stock but we are small and don't grow a lot of one variety.

Some growers will throw in extras that they have a lot of, or don't bloom
well, or they can't sell. I personally, would like to give something you
would like in your garden as a way of saying THANK YOU!
