This never happened to me until last year, when I decided
to try list advice and add alfalfa tea to my new plantings.
Apparently, the alfalfa attracted the deer, they pulled up
the iris, and then dropped them usually only a few feet
away. Other newly-planted iris without the alfalfa treatment
were not disturbed. (Deer tracks verified the culprits.)
