Re: preen, preen 'n green, other weed chemicals

Hope this isn't a duplicate message, I put it in the outbox and then added
to it.

Hi Linda,
We have used preen in non-stock areas of our garden and it doesn't appear to
have an adverse affect. We NEVER use roundup anywhere. Not that it isn't
very effective, it just has such terrible effects on iris. We use Poast
and Goal if
weeds get out of control. The best method for weed control is to get the
weeds before they get too large. We use a mechanical cultivator which
translates into weeding for people without tractors. :-) A good
pre-emergent like Surflan in late winter/early spring works wonders for weed
suppression.
A side note for Bill Shear. I have noticed that most commercial farms
in this area are going to more cultivation as opposed to chemical
applications. We are also, it seems to work better if you have the right
equipment. Also as a commercial iris garden we are not allowed to apply
chemicals in the amounts that are permissible for back yard garden use. The
concentration per acre is considerably lower than what is listed on
chemicals available in garden stores and nurseries. The results are equal
at a lower concentration. Makes me believe that the average back yard
garden gets way too much chemical applied.
Mike
