>To Linda and all the listers who seem to be plagued with an inordinate
amount of weeds this year.....Melody Wilhoit passed along a tip about what
they have found to be effective and harmless to the iris this year. They
mixed Pfost and Goal, half and half and sprayed it on their iris beds. The
first is effective on grass and the second takes care of the broad leaf
weeds. She said there was absolutely no ill effects to the irises. We
have to be careful what chemicals we use because when it rains there is a
run-off into the lake and our swans could be harmed. (thankfully, we've
never had a borer...and we treat all incoming and outgoing irises with a
bleach bath) We have used Pfost this year in a limited, controlled manner.
Preen has just not been as effective for us this year I guess due to all
the rain. I really like the sound of John Bruce's suggestion ....course
sand as mulch. We are definitely going to try that this year. We use lots
of bark mulch on everything but bearded irises. Weeds have been a bigger
problem this year than I ever remember in any year previously. Bill
Shear...what about using the combination of Pfost and Goal???...any words
of
caution?????>---------------------------------------------------------------
